Executive Director's Report

2008 looks like a pretty good year so far. We completed our regional needs assessment last year and have a lot of exciting recommendations that will improve the handling of the hundreds of thousands of tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) that is processed annually by our member jurisdictions. Most of these streamlining innovations call for an increased spirit of cooperation among the cities and the county in order to achieve the lofty goals we have set for ourselves. The expansion of the ModelFill landfill on Mabelvale Pike plods along. Everyone involved in this process is doing all they can to make this a win-win situation for all concerned. This approach – which takes time – is just one example of the new spirit of cooperation engendered here in the Pulaski County Regional Solid Waste Management District (District). As our board considers the ramifications of the requested expansion by this landfill’s owner and operator (Browning Ferris Industries) an awareness of the environmental impact versus the desire to provide landfill space for future generations is carefully considered as the investigative process continues.
Sustainability and the desire to encourage “green building” in both commercial and residential construction and demolition has gained considerable acceptance in the forward thinking building owners, homeowners and construction contractors. And we’ve just begun.
Recycling continues to grow in the District. From medical sharps to Styrofoam; from electronic waste to household chemicals; from cardboard to wallboard anything that can be recycled can usually find a processor that can handle it right here in our back yard. Are you doing your part or are you among the growing minority that is too busy (or too lazy) to set your recycling bin out by the curb four times a month or run by one of our Saturday morning drop-off centers with your week’s worth of recycling. New Household Chemical/Electronic Recycling Center Moving to West Little Rock

The District welcomes the new collection facility at 10,001 Kanis Rd. located in the back parking lot of the Little Rock Police Substation at the corner of Jr. Deputy and Kanis.

This center is open every Thursday 7-9:30 am and 3:30-5:30 pm. It is also open the 1st Saturday of each month from 7 am until 12 noon.

As with the other collection centers, computers, televisions, stereos, microwaves, copiers and cell phones will be accepted.

Used oil, gasoline, anti-freeze, fertilizers, pesticides and batteries will be accepted at the household chemical center.

The Electronics Collection Center will accept computers, printers, televisions, VCRs, microwaves, audio equipment and almost any other types of electronic equipment. Again, only normal household quantities will be accepted.
